Noah’s Ark

c.2000

48” x 48”

In the collection of Susan Fulton, Wash. DC

Hundreds of pieces of various fabrics create this precision-pieced kaleidoscopic design, including: hand dyed and printed cottons, and Bali batiks. It is embellished with metallic threads, crystal beads and a pewter ship’s wheel button. The perimeter of the symbolic “ark” is formed by strips of woodgrain fabrics, with kaleidoscopic images of animals inside. The viewer can discover 222 animals in this Mandalic design. The burst of sunlight at the right top corner filters through the rain, resulting in the rainbow at the lower left. The mandala is an ancient symbol of wholeness. The pewter ships wheel button in the center reminds the viewer to steer life’s course from the center of the soul.
